The problem
It is. Municipal treatment is built to deliver water that meets federal standards at the plant — then that water travels for miles through pipes of unknown age before it reaches your kitchen. Treated to standard and free of everything you'd rather not drink are two different things.
A family of manufactured compounds used for decades in nonstick coatings, stain repellents and firefighting foam. They break down extremely slowly in the environment, and they have been detected in drinking water supplies across the United States.
Lead doesn't come from the treatment plant — it comes from the plumbing. Older service lines, solder and brass fixtures can release it into water that was perfectly fine when it left the utility. Two homes on the same street can differ.
Disinfectants are added on purpose — they keep water safe on the way to you. But they are still in the glass at the end of the trip, and they are the usual reason tap water tastes and smells like a swimming pool.
Plastic fragments small enough to pass through conventional filtration have been reported in tap water and in bottled water alike. Switching to bottles does not obviously solve this one.
Water quality is local. Your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a public database of local water systems — both are worth reading before you decide what you want filtered out of your own tap.
The solution
Reverse osmosis is the same principle used in commercial and lab-grade water purification. What is new is that it now fits next to your kettle and pours chilled.
Pour tap water into the 1.32-gallon feedwater tank — enough for a family of four without constant refills. No line to tap into, no drain to connect.
PP cotton, activated carbon, PP sediment, the 0.0001-micron RO membrane, and a final activated carbon polish — all in one screw-in cartridge, so there is only ever one part to replace.
An in-line UV stage treats water on its way through, and a static UV stage keeps what is already in the pitcher from going stale between pours.
Purified water collects in a detachable 54 oz pitcher. Choose cold or ambient and one of four volume presets; reject water goes to its own tank that you tip into the sink.
No drilling, no shut-off valves, no plumber's invoice. Unbox it, run the start-up flush, fill the tank and plug it into a standard 120V outlet. Renters can take it with them.
Dual-thermoelectric cooling is refrigerant-free, which makes it quieter and lighter than a compressor. The manufacturer rates it at about 30 oz of chilled water down to 43°F after the initial cool-down, drifting to roughly 52°F in a warm room.
A built-in TDS monitor and filter-life indicator sit on the touch panel, so maintenance is a prompt rather than a guess. When the light comes on, the whole cartridge screws out and a new one screws in — no tools, no service visit.
About certification and claims. This system is WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, a standard covering one thing: the materials touching your water are lead-free. It does not certify what the unit removes. How we calculated this. Assuming a household drinks and cooks with about 2 gallons a day, or roughly 730 gallons a year. Countertop RO: $89.99 for the unit plus two $29.99 cartridges in the first year — the conservative end of the 6–12 month cartridge life — is $149.97, or $0.21 a gallon; after year one only the cartridges remain. Pitcher: about $30 for the pitcher plus roughly eighteen 40-gallon cartridges at about $6 each. Bottled water is figured at $1.50 a gallon, which is in the usual range for multipacks and jugs — check your own local price, because it is the one number here that varies most.
